Where I grew up, we called these June Bugs. I know it's local because most other "June Bugs" people describe are not green. I love these bugs. They don't leave a nice smell on your hands after you catch them, but we used to tie threads to their legs and have flying pets when I was a kid.

Yes, he's a very nice green, almost iridescent. Your photos are very good, Brian.
By the way, we only got to 98 in Portland itself. Out east in the Columbia River Gorge, one town made it to 109--yuck!
