spring approaches!

Spring is right around the corner, I can smell it. And the beautiful sunny weather outside today makes me think it's already here! A lot of the trees down at the park have blooms on them already, and my flowerbed is beginning to sprout too.

Today's photo is an old barn located on the Poor Farm down in Kaufman. For some history on the Poor farm, click here! Hope everyone's enjoying their Saturday!

i got your mud...

The Terrell Tribune recently changed their circulation schedule, resulting in today's issue being the next to last one that will be published before the March 2nd primary on Tuesday. (Sunday will be the last edition for the candidates to get in their final punches!)

My first photo above is Andrew Jordan's campaign ad in the Tribune. I share his concern in drawing attention to the shortfalls involving the current drunk DA, Rick Harrison. Personally, I don't understand how Mr Harrison still has his license after driving the wrong way down a street, hitting another car and refusing a breath-alyzer. My opinion... and vote for Andrew Jordan! =)

My only problem with the ad is the imaginary 'red' line through Mr Harrison reminds me of the diver's flag...

Next was an ad from Betty Brown. She apparently has a lot of money to spend with her 2 full page ads in the paper. One was her normal, sweet 'vote for me' ad.

The 2nd page ad was my photo below where Betty uses the word liberal 3 times and tries to tie Lance Gooden in with democrats. She's tamed her ad somewhat - recently she's been talking about how Lance was too young and had just moved out of his parent's house. Now she just tries to draw attention to the fact that Lance hasn't paid property taxes before.

I truly have no idea if he's paid property taxes before. All I know is he graduated valedictorian of his high school class and must be pretty smart.

I also know the ad makes you look petty, Betty. And I felt the ad was missing a proper red line through it for example. So here you go petty Betty.

my box is missing!

Anyone who doesn't check their post office box very often may be surprised on their next visit. The move of the post office from North Frances street over to hwy 34 was official this past Saturday, Feb 20.

While I was out walking tonight I noticed all the outside PO Boxes missing from the external building formerly housing them. The post office itself is for sale - I can't imagine what this external building could be used for now... time will tell =) and so will I when it happens!

And FYI for any PO Box owners: keys for boxes 1-1388 are available inside the new post office. keys for boxes 1389-2199 won't be available til Saturday!! =)

Too much time on your hands? Go Google 'Ewmew Fudd' and press 'I'm feeling lucky'.... Happy Thursday!

snow event?

Well, I worked from home today so I could be ready to respond to any problems relating to the snow event - and any staffing issues caused by bad weather.

There was hardly any snow in Terrell, and nobody had problems getting in to work... so it kind of feels like a wasted day. Although I found some time this evening to take a nyquil nap, and woke up feeling a little better.

LOST left me feeling.. lost, again. But next week's previews promise some answers. =)

old post office

my first photo tonight is the empty parking lot at the old post office located at 200 N Frances.

next, the posted notice that they've relocated to the new building on hwy 34 south.

and finally, a final look at the old loading dock. and some 'left behind' phone books =)

Today I went to choctaw casino up in Durant, Oklahoma. won a little money, and came home 'up' for a change. =) here's a link to the new resort casino's facebook page. i'm thinking about booking a room there for my birthday next month!

we met a few friends at the casino - and congrats to mack and michelle who found out they're having a boy! due sometime around the 4th of july... and on that subject, congrats to my sister, Jessica, who is expecting sometime in September...

And then there's Don and Krise up in Washington (75% chance a girl) due sometime around July 13th =) seems like there's something in the water lately!

I'm posting one more snow photo, then I'm going back to some normal photos tomorrow! if you'd like to see more snowmen, click through to my facebook page here...

This was my favorite out of all the snowmen - built by the fire department on the corner of Adelaide and Nash. ObstructedView has a photo of this one in progress over at his site.

jim has some great snow photos posted on his facebook page for Terrell Daily Photo too.

I made it through monday! and, more importantly, today i made it through my 3rd workout for week 5 of my running program - i ran non-stop for 20 minutes!!! I never thought I would be able to do it, having been a 2-pack a day smoker just 2 years ago... but I DID IT and you can too, click through here for the couch to 5k program!

snow families

several houses around town went all out and built more than one snowman! i'm guessing the first photo above is a snowdog, but i'm not sure.

there was one snow-spongebob up north of town too =)

one more quick post - seems this snowman was visited by the city code inspector, who found it not quite up to par. an order to stop work immediately was posted on this half-finished snowman =)

i got my eye on you (i think)

my eye! my eye! this poor snowman has lost an eye!

just a quick post for now, and i'll be following up later with a series of snowmen built around town. It's amazing how many people spent Thursday or Friday building snowmen in their yards =)

We went without power for a whole day, and ended up going to a hotel last night - hence the late blog post!

branching out

One more snow photo from Thursday. This snow-covered tree was in the yard of the First Baptist Church in Terrell. It's amazing how beautiful the white stuff makes things look =)

Frosty...

the snowman!!

I said if we got snow I'd build a snowman, so here it is!! He's a little lumpy and lop-sided, but we don't get much practice down here in Texas!

Now I need to go get me some coffee and Bailey's or something to warm me up!

signs, signs, everywhere there's signs

A couple days ago I posted a photo of Betty Brown's campaign sign from the 2008 election, and promised to get back with a current sign from this year ... so, here it is. Eerily similar to her last election signs, not that there's anything wrong with that.

The sign for Lance Gooden is Betty's challenger in the primary election.

For those of you who do not remember who Betty Brown is, she's the Texas state district representative who suggested back in 2009 that Asian Americans should 'Americanize' their names so it would be easier for Americans to pronounce. Ahem.

If you like, you can click thru to this site that will run your name through the Betty Brown name generator and return to you an official American name that any poll worker can understand =) My official Betty Brown approved name, according to this site, is Billy-Ray 'Pabst Blue Ribbon' Brown. Sounds good to me, and it even has beer in the name!

Oh, and in all fairness between the candidates:
Fun fact about Lance Gooden: He was the valedictorian of his high school class.
(Betty Brown was a baton twirler)

promises, promises...

i know i said i'd show you betty brown's new signs today, but trust me... if you've seen them once (2 years ago) you've seen them this year too...

so, i'm posting a photo of BC and Frosty. one from the archives, along with a video i've uploaded to youtube with them fighting.

maybe snow in another day? =) i promise to build a snowman if we get snow!

political observation...

today's photo is one from the archives. it was taken on election day of november, 2008. i'll follow up tomorrow with a photo of betty brown's sign for the current election.

fun fact: in high school, betty was a baton twirler.

when old is new again

today i've got an old photo of the First National Bank in downtown Terrell. The old photo was taken during World War II. The 'new' photo was taken on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. Amazing how some things change but others remain the same =)

happy friday!

Grandma asked why she hasn't seen Frosty lately, so here you go!

finish line!

well, i finished my 2nd workout in week 4 of my 'couch to 5k' running program. Supposedly, by the end of next week I'm supposed to be able to run 20 minutes without stopping. ha! i'd like to see that...

anyway, i've made it so far. also, i've had 8 months of anticipation waiting for LOST to begin the next season. And here I sit watching the recap show for the season premiere... and these last 30 minutes are excruciating!

i kind of feel like this runner about to come across the finish line. =)

taxes taxes taxes!

the Terrell Tribune reminds us that county property taxes were due feb 1st!

Today was also the deadline to register to vote in the March primaries!

You'll notice Betty Brown advertising on the Tribune links - she's been on there for several weeks... so she must have lots of cash on hand for paid ads. Her primary opponent is Lance Gooden, and more information about him can be found here.
