memories of yesteryear

Today's photo is the old frame cabin of a car... maybe a model A or T? It resides on a side street near the downtown area of Terrell... If I had a big enough yard, I'd use it as a big planter =)

Jim over at Terrell Daily Photo had one last month of an old VW Beetle that had been turned into a planter and painted like a lady bug! Here's a small shot, but you click over to Jim's site for a better photo!

and just a quick update on 'current events' -- we have hurricane Gustav barreling through the Gulf of Mexico towards New Orleans and Mississippi... Senator McCain is 'on-hand' in Jackson Mississippi to oversee hurricane preparations. Waiting now to see if the weather will disrupt the plans for the Republican convention. President Bush and Cheney have both canceled their appearances for Monday....

Mimosa

I can't wait for the pink blooms to come out on my mimosa tree - it usually gets them in the fall.

Happy Holiday weekend to all!!!

Carnegie Library

Home of the Terrell Heritage Museum...

Sorry for the short posts this week, but I've been wrapped up in convention coverage which continues through next week (i'm a political junkie and have to watch both sides!)... it's hard staying up later than usual to watch speeches and then getting up at 4:30 in the morning to work out!

down the street

This is a view down my street... a small new section of sidewalk wtih a nice clean edge to the grass in the lawn... i'll have to follow up with a photo of the concrete in front of my house, and the sections where you can tell the pecan tree roots have grown underneath =) My pecan trees are the tall trees behind the telephone pole at the end of this sidewalk

A few more 'corns

I was practicing taking some close-up shots down near First Baptist Church the other day when I took these last few photos. I'm lucky to have pecan trees in my yard, which produce something useful - I guess these acorns are good for the squirrels =)

acorns

With the Democratic National Convention being held this week in Denver, and the Republican National Convention coming up the following week in Minnesota, we can all expect to see a lot of 'nuts' making it on to the TV. Moderate (sane) party members aren't interesting and don't seem to make the news -- it's the 'crazies' over in the protest area that will be shown on over and over. And I'm not being partisan here, there will be crazies at both conventions...

A Chain is Coming

A Change is coming too!

These are the chains from yesterday's swing in the yard at the First Baptist Church.

I've decided to begin including a 'current events' item every now and again to kind of document it for when I look back over posts... so - looks like the big news item this weekend is Obama-Biden 2008! Well, that and McCain doesn't know how many houses he owns. What a horrible problem to have!

p.s. From the Chicago Sun Times, I've just realized that John McCain owns more homes than I own pairs of shoes. Amazing, huh?

Church swings swing like a pendulum do

Nope, no bobbies on bicycles two by two ;-)

These swings are in the yard at the First Baptist Church on the corner of Brin and Catherine Streets...

**update: and as far as my obscure title goes here, this picture reminds me of an old Roger Miller song that I enjoyed as a child. Here's the live youtube version:

Terrell Post Office

Today's photo is the front of our local post office - located a few blocks from my house =) I enjoy the nostalgic sense of living so close to an old downtown area... Happy Friday and weekend to all!!!

A little Frosty

By request, I'm posting an updated pic of Frosty today... he's growing really quick and pestering the daylights out of the older cat B.C. He hides, pounces, attacks, chases, bites, climbs, meows.... everything a little kitten should be doing =) he was born at the end of April, so he's right at 4 months now... My, how he's changed in 3 months since the photo below ;-)

Raindrops keep falling

but the rain's not falling on my head, cause i'm on the porch drinking cerveza!!!

we've had some much-needed (and welcomed) rain and some 'mild' temperatures this week. the rain tonight knocked out my satellite and forced me to go sit on the front porch and enjoy the sound of the rain.... and a couple cold cervezas!

Texas Lottery (play)

I'm going down my checklist of self-improvement items and I've checked off *stop smoking and *start exercising... now I'm down to *quit lottery... it's so hard to change old habits, as I'm well aware with my other life changes... i have a weak spot for scratch-offs. and i'm often under the false impression that if I keep buying them I'll eventually win big.... and the bright lights are so tempting, and I just love neon....

You can't see me!

I'm hiding behind this pole!

This is a goat that was in a trailer attached to the turquoise 'Studebaker' from yesterday... and my, what strange eyes these guys have - the iris is long and horizontal.. :-S

BOB (big ole building)

Today's photo is the back of a building that faces the main strip in downtown Terrell - the first 2 floors of the building houses Hard Bodies Fitness and Training Center, which is the gym that I recently joined to try and get in shape. Since quitting smoking at the end of June I had gained about 5 pounds - so I joined the gym on August 2nd to try and work out and stay in semi-shape =)
I need to do some research to find out what the building originally was, with the size I would guess a hotel but who knows. The first floor ceiling inside is probably about 15 feet tall or maybe a little more, with the old tin tiles and trim all around the edges and crown molding. It's impressive now and I'm sure was even moreso in its day. I'll try to get some inside pics in a follow up post... anyway, I've been getting up before work every weekday since Aug 4 now (8 work days in a row) and worked out, so yay me! I hope I can keep this up through at least the end of year. =) fingers crossed X

My Grandma

Good luck, thoughts and prayers for grandma today... she's going in to have her pipes cleaned out at the 'horse-pital' as she calls it... apparently the doctors were able to diagnose her 'air-headedness' as some clogged arteries... here I was sure she was turning into a dizzy blonde and there was an actual medical condition present! who knew!

p.s. note to Grandma... if you wiggle and squirm and flail your arms about when people take your picture, this is the kind of result you end up with!

**and a quick update just to let everyone know that the procedure went fine and the patient is in recovery. =) unfortunately it's a two-parter and she'll be going through this again in a month or so....but for now all is good ;-)

Terrell, Tire Tree-Swing

I remember swinging in quite a few 'tire swings' as a child. I was always fore-warned to check the inside of the tire to make sure there wasn't a snake inside prior to climbing in, but I never saw one myself...

Sundial crescent moon

Today's photo is a crescent moon on a sundial that's located in front of the Terrell Heritage Museum, or Carnegie library, which is also the banner photo over on Jim's Terrell site....

field of hay

I snapped this shot on the way down to my grandma's house yesterday... you know, over the river and through the woods....

and congrats to laurie for guessing correctly that the cats had a possum up a tree! actually, a baby possum up a yard hedge =) i think it got away safely (hopefully far away)...

Guess what?

The outdoor cats cornered something in the hedges - can you spot it? any guesses what they've 'caught'?

Big Oil's Demise....

One day this will be a common sight... old gas station signs stacked and tucked away in alleys and empty lots. Happy Friday and hope everyone enjoys their weekend!

Skywatch Friday

An early post this week, yes, I'm combatting my procrastination... so, here's my post for skywatch Friday that I captured earlier this week. I was outside watching and waiting for some rain to come from the dark black clouds, and instead it sprinkled rain for a few minutes and then passed us by. I was about to go inside when I noticed this beautiful rainbow. and ran inside to get my camera... this was my first attempt at photographing a rainbow... =) not too bad, but i still need more practice =)

Please take a moment and hop over and visit all the blogs participating in skywatch friday!

Artesia Lodge Signs

I'm not sure exactly what these signs stand for or mean, but they look cool next to the brick building on the side of the Artesia Lodge. This is the side of the building across from our post office in the downtown area....

Texas Wasps

These little guys had been busy at work right above where I sit on the front porch and enjoy my beer... so their days were numbered. I took this photo right before shooting them with some Raid =)

Out-house

I’m a political news junkie and when my grandma told me she’d heard of some local residents who’d set up an out-house for politicians, I knew I’d have to go get a shot for my blog. So I drove around with Jim over at Terrell Daily Photo to find it… personally, I probably would’ve made a much more pointed, partisan message if I’d done this in my yard – but this is more friendly and enjoyable to the masses…
Please hop over to Jim’s Terrell Daily Photo to see the other part of this recent construction… and I’ll follow up later with my own full ‘double-decker’ shot later…

Saturday... unofficial Theme day

Well, since I procrastinated and missed signing up for theme day -- I decided to procrastinate and post my 'unofficial theme day' photo late also =) just kidding - I ended up going through a lot of trouble trying to gain access to my website today, which ended up being a problem between sitemeter and Internet Explorer... all seems to be working now, and I have now d'loaded firefox as an alternative browser just in case... anyway, the theme day fell on skywatch friday so -- here is my metal (buford drugs sign) and a bright blue sky...

I have a nice political photo ready for tomorrow that I'll be posting in tandem with Jim over at Terrell Daily Photo... =) and a brief smoking update - I'm almost 6 weeks smoke-free now, and today I went and joined the local gym AND went and worked out for almost an hour!

Friday night - Sleepy Frosty

I ended up taking a short road trip with my grandmother today (friday), so I'll post a 'theme' day photo tomorrow =)
I'm actually having trouble pulling my site up tonight.. i can see the page for a second before I get an IE error message and it disappears... so I finally got in to blogger just to post, but I'm a little late for friday....
