Reverend Ivan Johnson

The Reverend Ivan Johnson, an accomplished community leader and long-time Terrell resident, passed away last Saturday, May 24, 2008. A brief biography of the former Kaufman County commissioner and pastor can be found in this article from the Terrell Tribune.

The first photo above shows the police escort waiting outside the First Baptist Church of Terrell, where the funeral service was being held this morning. The next photo shows Terrell Mayor Hal Richards speaking at the wake for Rev. Johnson, which was held last night, Friday May 30, 2008.

This last photo below shows the outside of the church and the cars parked all around the block and up and down the streets… It’s a beautiful day outside, and a nice way to say ‘Goodbye, Thank You and God Bless’ to a distinguished and loved member of the community…
**Note: Thanks to Mr. Floyd C. for providing the photo of Mayor Hal Richards from Rev. Johnson's wake....

I Give Up!!

Ok, in all seriousness - the kitten doesn't give up... I'm the one who gives up to him actually. He gets lots of rest during the day when I'm at work, so when I get home he has plenty of energy to crawl, scratch, bite, climb, jump and play... and of course he's too young to know when to use his claws and when to retract them. I have a new video on the right hand column with Frosty in a plastic bag... I really do love these playful times of kittens, they make me feel a little younger too when I'm trying to run away from him!

Downtown 'Alley'

Today's photo is a small narrow walkway in-between two of the buildings in downtown Terrell. The brick-work on the right hand side belongs to Cowboy's convenience store. The left hand side is a stucco side of Konings Gun shop; one of the old buildings facing downtown.

Downtown Terrell - Catherine Street

Today's photo shows the intersection of Catherine street with downtown Terrell... this angle is taken from right next to the First National Bank building in yesterday's photo, looking south. I live right up the street on North Catherine just a few blocks, and enjoy walking downtown to take pictures every now and then.....=)

P.S. i have a short youtube video of Frosty... please take a look if you have a sec! You may want to turn the volume down - I need to mute my political news next time i make a video.... =)

First National Bank - Terrell

Today's photo is a close-up of the First National Bank building in downtown Terrell. I've posted different angles of the bank before; I just find older buildings like this very impressive and photo-worthy =) I hope everyone had a nice and safe holiday weekend!

Happy Memorial Day 2008

In honor of Memorial Day, I'm posting a photo from the archives today. This is a photo of my Christmas lights from 2001. Right after 9-11, I got all of my lights out of the garage in October and built this 8 foot tall by 16 foot wide lighted replica of the U.S. Flag. I kept this lit from about the end of October through the beginning of January, and had lots of people driving by the house at night to see it.

It was both amazing and nice to think back at how unified we all felt as Americans back at that time ...

Terrell Taco Bell Update

I published a couple posts back in March about Taco Bell, and its demolition. The construction crew has been hard at work over the last 2 months, and the new structure is almost complete now. The landscaping all around the new building is really nice...

I never knew how much I would miss Taco Bell until it was no longer a close option... looks like I won't have to wait much longer =)
Here's a link to the old building when it was first being demolished....

Soulman's Bar-B-Que Coming to Terrell

While out eating breakfast with my grandma last Sunday, I noticed that the neon sign on the old Grandy's had been changed to Soulman's Barbeque!!! I was so excited, being the bbq afficionado that I am.

Back around 2000, when my company office was located down in Desoto, I used to go out to eat lunch with co-workers at the Soulman's location located off I-20 in south Dallas/Desoto all the time. They have some of the best bbq, fried okra, banana pudding and sweet tea that I've ever had! When my company office moved up to Plano, I started going out to eat at the Soulman's in Rockwall every now and then... and now Terrell will have it's very own soon!!! This isn't going to be good for my diet =)...

Friday night Frosty

Just a quick note to wish a happy and safe Memorial Day weekend to all... and a new photo of Frosty, taken just a few minutes ago - his eye is pretty much all healed now, and he's as wild as a kitten can be.

Old Barn

Today's photo is an old barn, or a reproduction of an old barn, located in Heritage Park in downtown Edgewood.
Thanks to all for the nice comments about Frosty - his eye is doing fine, the eyedrops (antibiotic) from the vet is doing the trick. He's a feisty little guy who kept me awake all night long on Monday and Tuesday night - every time I moved, he swatted, bit, scratched my arm... all in a playful manner, but I woke up every time I felt those little claws.... last night he slept pretty well through the night, snuggled next to my arm all night... I'll be following up with some updated photos soon. In the meantime, I'm just hoping for another full night of sleep!

Windmill

There are a lot of windmills in our area east of Dallas; we even have a housing development called windmill farms. This photo I captured in downtown Edgewood at Heritage Park, right around dusk... I'd love to have one of these in my yard that generates electricity =)

Frosty the Kitten

Well, I finally brought my new kitten home on Monday night. I was worried about him when I first picked him up because he had some kind of infection in one of his eyes. So Frosty had his first visit to the veterinarian at the Terrell Vet Center yesterday.

It's strange how the minute I walked into the vet's office, Frosty started shaking and shivering until we walked out... he knew to be scared/nervous even at his age of 5 weeks....

Bird on a Cross

Today's photo is the cross of an old church at Heritage Park in downtown Edgewood. I tried to capture the pigeon in mid-flight, but wasn't prepared and got him after he landed....

Today's photo is a brick pathway that I found when I went to the groomer in Edgewood on Saturday...

Sayonara Sunday

I started my next home project today, and will be following up with some photos over the next few weeks. I decided to try to paint my house, so the object is to see how far I get before I hire someone to finish. I usually have big ideas, but the work always seems to be more than what I imagine…

I’m determined to work a little at a time and not get overwhelmed with the scope of the project… this is a photo I snapped in downtown Edgewood yesterday, and seemed appropriate for the kick-off…

Lazy Dog Sunday

Today is the final pet photo in my series with a photo of Blondie. Blondie is Bam Bam's mother, and if you haven't figured out yet all my animal names begin with the letter B (Bingo, Blondie, Bam Bam). My next pets I'll have to think of some C lettered names =)

It was quite warm out today so Blondie wanted to stay under the porch where it was cool... I got her to come out for just a few minutes, but the sun was too bright for her, as you can see below =)

Different Day, Different Dog, Different Car....

By request from a fellow dog-lover, today's post is a another photo of one of my dogs, Bingo. Bingo is Bam Bam's dad (from yesterday's photo). He's my oldest dog too, at 14 years... I hate to say I have a favorite dog out of my three, but if I were to pick one....hmmm... Bingo!

He was supposed to get a haircut today at Amber's Pet Parlor, which I'll be following up with some photos of her shop out in Edgewood, Texas later also... Anyway, we had to end up re-scheduling because of dull blades....
This photo was actually taken in Wills Point on my way back from Edgewood, and if you look closely you can see a road sign in the background that says Elmo 9 miles and Terrell 16 miles....

Riding in Cars with Dogs

Today was the annual vaccination day for my dogs, which is no easy task. I've got 3 springer spaniels, and they get so excited to travel anywhere - and even more so when they travel together. This is a photo of Bam Bam, the baby of the three...

No matter how long I walk them before taking them inside the vet's office, they always manage to pee from excitement when they get inside...

Bass Rutledge Drugs

Today's photo is of Bass Rutledge drugstore in downtown Terrell. This is one of the few original stores in downtown that is still in operation, and has been doing business in the same location for over 100 years.

The second photo here is a night shot that I took last year...

Happy Mom's Day

Happy Mother’s Day to my mom, Glenda… this is one of my favorite photos of her, taken at a small restaurant in St. Thomas U.S. Virgin Islands back in 1998. I had won the trip through work, and this photo was taken during a short shopping trip on our last morning there.

My mom is an accomplished sculptor and doll artist, and some samples of her work can be seen at her website link on the right side of the page…

And my, how times change... here is a photo of my mom with my older brother Greg. This one was taken back when she worked on the starship Enterprise....

My new kitten... Frosty

This is a photo of the kitten I'll be getting in a few weeks. I took the photo this past Monday, when he was just about 2 weeks old. He had only opened his eyes a few days before. When he was first born he was all white, but he seems to be getting a little more gray markings as he's getting older.

I'm anxious to get him home, and hoping that my older cat will be nice to him =) I'm thinking of naming him Frosty...

Buford Drugs

I've always loved this old drugstore sign in downtown Terrell. It's an old neon sign, but I've never seen it lit up since I've lived here....

Cheap Gas in Terrell

Since my back started feeling better, I decided to get out and get some exercise yesterday by walking from my house to downtown Terrell… I live just a few blocks away, so I can walk down and back without getting too tired =)

I found these gas pumps at an old Texaco on Rockwall street, a block from downtown. It’s funny to think that kids earning their driver’s licenses right now will probably never use a pump like this. It would probably confuse them trying to find where to swipe their card also…

I’m not sure exactly when this station closed, but the ‘Regular’ grade gasoline was $1.439 a gallon and the ‘Premium’ was $1.609 a gallon. It’s a little difficult to see, but each pump has a sign on the side warning that the gasoline contains Lead… and a little less difficult to see would be my shadow portrait to the bottom left ;-)

Terrell Heritage Society Museum - Carnegie Library

This is one of my favorite buildings in town, and I've posted it several times before. It's also the header photo over on Jim's Terrell Daily Photo. I've changed this one to Infrared in PSP.

Downtown Terrell

Today's photo is a shot from the middle of downtown Terrell, or actually the middle of Moore Street (aka hwy 80), looking east towards the old downtown area.

Just to the right of the first pic, but out of view, is the Iris Theater as seen below.

Frog Friends Forever

I found these little 'friendly' frogs in a koi pond next to my mom's house. The koi were beautiful, but it was hard to capture them with the light reflecting off the pond...

Farmer's Market Tractor 2

Please forgive me for 'double-posting' the same photo, but I've been trying to get some more practice in the photo editing software. I like this process of adding a layer of the photo in b&w or infrared, and then erasing the b&w just over one object. So the tractor is its original color, and the rest of this photo is infrared.

Which do you like better, original or 'enhanced'?

Farmer's Market Tractor

This is an old tractor that sits at one of the entrances to the Farmer's Market in downtown Dallas in the middle of a flower bed....

Thanks to all for the well wishes on my back problem i had this week... the muscle relaxers and pain meds have been doing the trick... still a little soreness, but at least I can stand up and sit down without too much pain....
This last photo is the sign at the entry to the market....

May Theme Day - Numbers

The theme for the first of May is ‘numbers’ so my photo is a close-up of my pool balls…. I won my pool table in an auction, and it had been in a bar in its former life – the old balls and change machine came with it, and you have to pay 75 cents to release the balls to play….

Please take a moment to visit all the other City Daily Photo blogs participating in the May theme day:
